After two glasses of wine and an hour of feeling sorry for myself, I decided I’d had enough self-pity for one day. Rising from my cozy chair, I took one last look at the sparkling water as the moon rose high in the sky. How one could ever get used to a view like that, I’d never know. I’d been raised in this house, and still, it never ceased to take my breath away. After a quick stop by the kitchen sink to rinse out my glass, I headed to the large pantry, deciding I needed a little baking therapy to pass the time. Although the Lovells had offered to take care of their own meals since I comped the room, I decided to treat them for their help over the last week. As much as I hated to admit it, I couldn’t have done it all without them. Grabbing flour, sugar, and a few more items, I settled on a family favorite recipe—zucchini bread. I’d added my own little flair to it over the years, but the basic recipe was still the same. There was something almost restorative about the process of mixing ingredients. With no need for a recipe anymore, I found myself humming a song I’d heard on the radio earlier in the day, and my mood began to lift. That was, until the doorbell rang. Wiping my hands on a dish towel, I checked my appearance in the hallway mirror, rolling my eyes at the flour that coated my cheeks. My mom always said I was a messy baker. I guessed some things never changed. Putting on my best face possible, I prepared myself, morphing into the hostess with the mostest. It didn’t always happen, but every now and again, I’d have unexpected visitors. People who’d missed the last ferry and were in desperate need for a place to stay or others who had just fallen in love and didn’t want to leave. In every case, I always found a place for them, sometimes even giving up my own rooms to accommodate them. Pulling open the door, I greeted the late-night visitor with a bright smile. But, the moment I saw his face, that familiar rugged jaw and piercing blue eyes, my smile faded into something less than pleasing. “What are you doing here, Jake?” I nearly snarled. “Is that any way to greet a guest?” he replied sluggishly. He was clearly drunk. “Did you drive here in that state?” I asked, looking over his shoulder to make sure a car wasn’t wrapped around the neighbor’s tree. “No,” he answered. “Waited until I was parked outside before I popped open the bourbon. Did you know, if you park right there”—he pointed behind him, making his sloppy posture even worse—“you can see the backyard? You still like to sit out on the deck, huh?” My cheeks heated with anger as I realized my private moment of sulking had been witnessed by none other than hotshot Jake Jameson. I sighed, noticing the way his eyes followed mine. “What do you want?” I finally asked, averting his gaze. “I’m a wayward tourist in need of a place to stay.” My arms folded across my chest as he made himself at home, breezing past me to stumble into the sitting room. His large body seemed to melt into the couch as I tried not to think about all the things we’d done in this room while my parents were out of the house. “You have a place to stay, Jake,” I reminded him. “And, no matter how much you try to convince yourself, you’re no tourist. Not even a fancy degree could change that twang in your voice.” He laughed, a sound that made my spine tingle. “You’re right. I can’t seem to shake it. But it does do me some favors every now and then.” He gave me a quick grin and a wink, causing me to nearly spit fire. The idea of him using his stupid accent to get women into bed—it shouldn’t have affected me so, but it did. It really did. “Look,” I said, feeling my never-ending river of patience suddenly drying up, “it’s late, and I know you’ve had a rough day, but—” “I tried, Molly. God, how I tried.” “Tried what?” I asked, pinching the bridge of my nose. “I tried to forget you. But I never could. I tried to forget this place and all it represented, but the memories never faded. You never faded.” My heart galloped a little faster, but luckily my anger won the race. “You’ve got to go, Jake. You can’t stay here.” “But I can’t go back there, Mols. I can’t go back to that house. There are too many ghosts. Too many memories. It hurts.” The way he’d said it reminded me of the scared boy I’d once held in my arms as he wept for his mother. It tugged at the few remaining heartstrings I had for this man, and suddenly, I found myself caving. “Fine.” He instantly perked up, turning his head, as his bright blue eyes found mine again. “But you will pay double, and don’t expect any special treatment.” He nodded as he tried to stand, swaying back and forth. I ran forward, keeping him from crashing into my antique coffee table. The generosity I’d felt just moments before was already starting to bite me in the ass. “Got it,” he said as my hands wrapped around his muscled biceps. That intense stare of his was back as his fingers found mine. “You won’t even know I’m here,” he whispered, the smell of bourbon on his breath. “Highly unlikely,” I grumbled, pulling my hand from his. The heat of it remained, like a brand against my skin. “Now, you can take the—” “Yellow room,” he said, finishing my sentence. It had always been a favorite of his. Mine, too. “Fine,” I replied, trying to seem unaffected by his demand. “I assume you still remember the way?” He held up his palm in front of his face. “Like the back of my hand.” “That’s the front, Doctor.” He laughed, sounding drunker than I’d ever seen him. “Right.” Taking a few steps forward, his body brushed against mine. “I like it when you call me doctor.” I took a deep breath, putting some much-needed space between us. “You would. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have bread to bake.” “Bread!” he nearly shouted before chuckling under his breath. He said in a hushed tone, “I love bread.” “Go to bed, Jake.” “You first.” Those two words were like a cold bucket of water. His gaze suddenly sharpened as a tingle went down my spine. Both of us knew he wasn’t talking about sleeping, and for a moment, I let him know it. No eye roll or quick-witted comeback. I just stood there, letting myself indulge in a single moment that signified a lifetime of memories. And then the jerk threw up on my shoes.

I liked this book, but it wasn't one of my favorites.

A big part of the reason was because of the pushing away. I hate that in books, and it's pretty much all the MC's done. 

I liked the characters for the most part. This is a second chance love story. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I needed just a little bit more from them.

What had started as a fun little game to bring this timid beauty out of her shell somehow turned into a wrestling match. And I was the one about to lose. Katelyn O’Malley was nothing like I’d imagined. What had I imagined? I wasn’t sure exactly. I’d diligently done my homework— reading Scandal not once, but twice— before I’d hopped on a plane to Oregon. I’d thought the novel would give me insight to this perplexing woman I was about to meet. It hadn’t. Not one bit. If anything, it’d created a thousand more questions. At first, cracking her ironclad shell seemed like a daunting task. She had come off dry and dull. God-awful boring. But boring women didn’t do tequila shots until two in the morning. Boring women didn’t lie to waiters for free wine and dessert. And boring women definitely didn’t make me feel this way. Needy. Desperate. And fucking horny as hell. Even the way she licked the chocolate off her fork was making me shift uncomfortably in my seat. This was a job. Get your head in the game. “You were pretty good at that,” I said, trying not to stare at the way her pink tongue darted out to grab the last bit of mousse from the tip of her finger. “Good at what?” she asked. “Lying.” She let out a choking cough, patting her chest with her palm. “I’m not a good liar,” she argued. “Really? The way they leaned into one another, the way they walked. It was as if they’d been doing so forever.” I studied her for a quiet moment, recalling the intensity of her words and the passion in her voice. It was the first time since meeting Katelyn O’Malley, I could actually see a sliver of Laura Stone, the author, somewhere inside. “I do believe you are a bit of a romantic at heart,” I replied. She smiled sweetly. “Maybe a hopeless one.” My hand reached out to hers, a needless gesture since we’d already achieved our goal for the evening and sold everyone on our false marital status. This time, I touched her because I wanted to. “Definitely not hopeless,” I said softly, knowing that instant that I was crossing the line between business and pleasure. My normally quiet nature seemed to take a backseat when it came to this guy. He made me angry, flustered, and… something else I couldn’t put my finger on. Annoyed maybe? No, that wasn’t it. “What is your problem?” I blurted out, chasing behind him. “My problem?” he asked, spinning around to face me. Suddenly, he was too close. I could feel his breath on my face, his presence looming over me. I took a step back. He seemed to notice the unease settle around me, and a bit of the edge he carried chipped away. His next words were said with a slightly softer quality. “Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. I didn’t mean to sound so harsh, but if the store doesn’t do well, it’s on me. My dad thinks it’s a waste of time.” “And you don’t?” I didn’t know what a rich, popular kid wanted with an old bookstore, but I kept my mouth shut. He shrugged. “We have nothing in this crummy town, not even a movie theater. Last month, I wanted to see the new Marvel movie, and my friends and I had to drive thirty minutes away just to see it.” “Haven’t you ever heard of Netflix?” I asked. “It’s not the same as seeing it on the big screen.” “I wouldn’t know,” I replied. “What?” He grinned. “You’ve never been to a movie?” The way he said it was meant as a joke, but all laughter died when I shook my head. “Seriously?” “I mean, I’ve watched several on TV but never at a theater,” I answered, not able to meet his stare. “I thought you were from the city.” My eyes flew up to his. “Oh, so you really did think you were invisible. Sam just kept smiling. “Word of advice, Mittens. The less you try to be invisible, the less interested people will be.” I let out a heavy sigh, snatching the remainder of the books from the counter. As he’d reminded me earlier, I wasn’t being paid to mess around. And I sure as hell didn’t need life lessons from an over privileged daddy’s boy. I hated this place.

a Rafflecopter giveaway Review | 4 stars So, I was a little surprise by the book. I enjoyed it more than what I was expecting. I loved pretty much all of the characters (hated Willow's mom. You'll understand). Her Aunt is great. I really enjoyed Addy's character. She was quirky and just a joy to read about. And she cared for Willow like her mother should have. She makes some other friends at school that I really liked. One of my favorite things though was the book store. I loved the scenes that took place there. Honestly it's just a cute high school book. Although it does deal with a serious topic that some might not find that they would like to read about. Overall, it's really cute and I enjoyed reading it. I definitely hope JL Berg decides to write more YA. I would definitely read them if she did.

"Can I ask you something?" she said, drawing my attention away from the monotony on my computer screen. I looked up to find her eyes dead set on mine. It was unnerving. She usually tried to avoid direct eye contact with me. Maybe I intimidated her. Perhaps she found me attractive and the idea of lusting after her boss bothered her. Believe me, it bothered me too. In a very physical way. “Go ahead,” I answered, unwilling to break the intimate connection she'd started. "When you saw me… at the club that night," she said, her eyes wavering just slightly. "What was it you saw in me? I mean, was it just the clothes?" My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Even though I'd said we'd never speak of what happened that drunken night two weeks ago, I saw something in her eyes that needed an answer. That needed something more. "Why are you asking?" "It's nothing, sorry. I'm being stupid," she backpedaled, as she began fiddling with the hem of her skirt. Looking back at our few interactions, I suddenly noticed the difference in how she'd acted today. Her normal never-ending stream of word vomit was there, but behind it, there was an internal struggle going on. The hemline wasn't the first thing she'd fidgeted with. I'd watched as she'd pulled at the collar of her shirt and then, as if she'd realized what she had done was wrong, quickly lay it flat again. "Does this have something to do with the way you're dressed today?" Pink tinged her cheeks once again. "You noticed?" I simply nodded, not trusting myself with words in that moment. Because I’d more than noticed. It’d been damn hard not to think about anything but. "A gift from my boyfriend," she replied. "He said my old clothes didn't fit in with our new life style. It was a very generous gift," she added, never forgetting that politeness she'd no doubt been taught since birth. "But?" I questioned, waiting for her to continue. "But… I don't feel like me anymore," she finally admitted. "And I'm guessing the night in the club was another gift of his as well?" It was her turn to nod. I could see the indecision and worry gnawing at her. Someone like her, sweet, honest and good… she was meant for better things than a life with a man who didn't appreciate her. Leaning forward, I made sure she saw the sincerity burning in my eyes as I spoke. "That night in the club, I'll admit, I noticed the dress first." She opened her lips to speak but I held up my hand to stop her, wanting to make my point. "And today, when you walked in, I couldn't help but give a second… or third glance at the way that new skirt hugged your ass." Her eyes widened at my blatant honesty.
